Carolee Bailey
1934 - 2010
Carolee Bailey exemplified all that we cherish in CFUW: pursuit of knowledge,
promotion of education, improving the status of women and girls and participating in public concerns.
Whenever Carolee committed herself to an effort, she enthusiastically offered her time, energy, and expertise.
Carolee expanded her community interest beyond women and children to promote the care of the elderly.
She demonstrated this with her major contribution to drafting a resolution on Home Care
that received national recognition and acceptance. Perceiving the need, Carolee actively participated
in crafting a Strategic Plan for CFUW Burlington. Carolee accomplished much
as a member of the Executive and coordinator of the Membership Committee. She crafted the
Terms of Reference for the Advocacy Committee. And all this she did with humility, grace and a lovely smile.
Carolee was a writer and a great story teller. The Writers' Group enjoyed many cups of tea and cookies
in Carolee's home. She really was one of the driving forces in the completion of the publication
of a collection of the group's stories and poems. The proceeds were donated to our scholarship fund.
Carolee enriched our lives in various ways and none so richly as with the gift of her friendship.
She gave that great feeling to many of us that we were her best friend.
Each of us who knew and loved her cherish that feeling and memory.
Carolee radiated a joy of living. We live more fully because of Carolee.
She has left us a legacy of courage, determination and faith.

Farewell to Friends
By Joan Shewchun
Now they are starting to fall -
Some as lightly as leaves in autumn,
Gold fading to brown,
As they drift gently away.
Others as sudden
As trees felled in the forest,
And the earth trembles
At the shock of their absence.
And the long snows of winter
Softly settle upon them all.
Joan Shewchun is a member of CFUW Burlington.
Her poem is soon to be published by McMaster University
in an anthology called
Celebrating Poets over Seventy.
Joan has asked that it be dedicated to Carolee.
